What is Collagen?
8 June 2022, 16:25

Collagen is a protein that could be described as one of the major building blocks of our bodies; our collagen requirements are produced within our own metabolism but with the passage of time we don’t produce quite enough to replenish that which is lost.

This like many other biological changes begins in our late 20’s, from this point on the reduction of collagen manifests in the form of fine lines, wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, hydration and density.

Another interesting feature of depleted collagen levels is thinning hair, brittle nails, declining mobility, joint and connective tissue health.

The connection between skin health and our overall health is fundamental; the production of vitamin D from exposure to sunlight is key to our general good health so it is a case of taking good care of the body’s largest organ the skin.

Once again diet plays a major role in maintaining skin health generally, sources of collagen protein supporting foods are salmon, oily fish, chicken, nuts, egg whites, beans and leafy greens, the use of sunscreens and clothing to provide protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

Exposure to sunlight is portrayed as something to avoid by some and by others how sunlight exposure is health promoting; like much written about our health moderation is the key. Depending on the time of year and cloud conditions exposure between 10-30 minutes per day is considered health promoting; extended exposure may cause many different health compromising skin conditions.

The use of clothing, sunscreen and shade offer protection against the ravages of overexposure.
