Our lungs are rather like a set of bellows by changing shape and volume they facilitate the movement of air both in and out of our lungs through the airways; both nasal and throat passages. Air which contains approximately 21% oxygen is filtered to a certain extent as it passes into our lungs through our airways, contaminants are picked up on the moist surface area of the airways reducing the risks associated with breathing contaminated air. The lungs are where a transfer takes place oxygen into the blood stream and co2 removal from our blood stream.
The lungs are an interesting organ, they are the very essence of life itself. Our very existence is dependent on lung function to oxygenate our blood to feed the body via the blood stream; our lungs achieve this by exposing a surface area of 60 to 90 square meters or 650 to 970 square feet, within our lungs. This demonstrates the basic chemistry principle the greater the surface area the faster the reaction. This massive area
within the structure of our lungs is the equivalent area if laid out flat of approximately half of a tennis court. The lung is a sponge type structure made up of approximately 700,000,000 alveoli a small sphere of tissue 0.0003 diameter tissue, this is key to the oxygen co2
transfer to our blood stream.
Our lung health is fundamental to our overall good health, we mentioned breathing exercises in our last newsletter, this exercise enriches the oxygen level within our lungs; blood oxygen is fundamental to body function including the repair and restoration of damaged areas or sickness.
One of the major causes of breathing difficulties is inflammation of airways and tissue within the lungs which can very often lead to breathing difficulties, like rasping, wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath during periods of exertion.
