Help Your Beloved Pet Alleviate Their Allergy Symptoms with These Simple Tips
Pets can suffer from allergies just like humans and experience the watery eyes, sneezing and itching at certain times of year or when they come into contact with certain things. If their allergy symptoms seem to pop up around the spring and summer time, it’s likely they’re allergic to the pollen in the air.
If their symptoms happen at other times of year, you may have to do a bit of detective work to find out what Is causing their symptoms. Allergies can be caused by a range of other things including; their food, household cleaners, insecticides, mould, cigarette smoke, plants and dust mites to name a few.
Why Do Allergies Happen?
While we know that allergies can be caused by certain triggers in the environment, having an allergy can also point to an imbalance in the health of the immune system. A healthy immune system starts in the gut and if your pet has an imbalance of the healthy bacteria in their gut, this can lead to a weakened immune system and them being susceptible to inflammation and infection.
Allergies are basically when the immune system overreacts to a substance, that isn’t actually harmful. This is when the body releases Histamine, which is what causes the runny nose and itchy, sore eyes for example.
How to Relieve Your Pets Allergy Symptoms?
If your pet is suffering from allergies, you’ll need to do a checklist of his environment to eliminate any triggers. Also take a good look at his health and whether he’s getting; a balanced diet, a clean environment to live in, high quality supplements and a fresh water source.
Balanced diet. Cats and dogs need a balanced diet to ensure they stay in optimal health. Even though they are carnivores, grains and carbohydrates are still needed and an essential part of a healthy diet. Too much high fat, high sugar food will affect their gut health just like in humans. Feed a high quality pet food and give low fat snacks throughout the day to keep energy up.
Give immune boosting health supplements. Adding supplements to your pet’s diet is a great way to support and boost their immune system, which may help alleviate allergy symptoms. Supplements to include in your pet’s diet are; a fish oil containing omega3 which is known to reduce inflammation, a probiotic supplement to restore healthy gut bacteria and natural health supplements containing ginger, Echinacea, eyebright, feverfew or Asian ginseng.
Make sure their immediate environment is clean. Your pet’s allergies may be triggered by something in your home like dust mites, flowers, mould spores, dirt or dampness for example. Make sure your pet gets his paws and coat cleaned after being outside to eradicate dust, dirt and pollen. If he brings this into the house regularly, this could mean he’s constantly breathing all this in which will just trigger his symptoms.
