At this time of year - Christmas and the holidays, the social scene may be tough for pets to cope with, their world is turned upside down by this. Friends, family and neighbours visiting, is quite disruptive to their social scene and overall environment, this may result in pets becoming stressed and sometimes results in significant behavioural issues especially pets that have little contact with children through the year.
But over Christmas and the holiday period their world is turned upside down by the presence of young children and other unfamiliar people and let’s not forget the availability of food and our tendency to feed some of these tidbits to our pets; much of what we eat is not suitable for our pets. The sugars and starches are something they have a tendency to like and seek out, these sugars and starches may have significant health compromising effects on their health and wellbeing.
Christmas is the time of year when we like to spoil our children, grandchildren, friends and family, when this tendency extends to food for pets we must be conscious of the potential of developing bad habits and cravings for our pets, just remember chocolates are bad for our pets along with those sugary treats. It’s a good idea to buy treats that are specifically intended for pets.
