Pet Corner - Lockdown and New Family Members
3 March 2021, 10:41

As a result of the lockdowns New Zealanders have made a number of changes to their way of life to adapt to the limits and restrictions that have been imposed upon us. A very noticeable change was the addition of a new family member, a dog appears to have been the choice for many.

If you’re contemplating dog ownership and your unfamiliar with just what is involved it is a good idea to get the whole family involved in the various decisions that need to be made. It important to prepare the home and grounds that they have access to and be mindful of the choice of dog, the breed and their characteristics and especially the physical size and their requirements for space both inside and outside the home.

The time commitment for exercise, grooming and attention varies depending on the size and breed.

Young puppies have got a habit of chewing on just about anything; to prevent this you can restrict access of isolate areas or provide them with something specifically for them to chew on and like a child with a cuddly or pacifier they will focus on and attach themselves to what could become a favourite item for their attention and focus. When this becomes established it’s a good idea to have a spare.

Dogs are a great addition to the family as the children are growing up and of course in later years they are a great companion for a couple or when the household is downsized to just one or two.

I remember seeing an article that noted people with dogs recovered faster from various types of surgery and it was attributed to the exercise the patients engaged in as a result of being a dog owner and the persistence of dogs to take you for a walk. The take away from this is of course regular exercise as we head along the path of life is good for you, use it or lose it.
