Back pain can range from mild to debilitating. If you’ve ever experienced it before you’ll know it’s not a pleasant thing to go through. While some back pain can be down to injury or a condition like osteoarthritis, some pain can be caused by poor posture or having weak stabilisation muscles around the trunk of the body.

Some experts have concluded that pain in the back or joints, can also be caused from a nutritional deficiency. If you’re experiencing back or joint pain, it’s always advised to check with your doctor before trying any new routine out. It’s good to get to the root cause of the pain, so you can work on changing something that may be causing pain like the way you stand for example. Here’s some supplements that could support pain relief.

Vitamin D Supplement

A Saudi Arabian study tested participants with back pain of an unknown origin, to see what the levels of vitamin D in their bodies were like. Experts found that 83% of the people tested with low back pain were vitamin D deficient. After vitamin D supplementation was given, there was widespread improvement in pain levels across all involved. If you have chronic low back or joint pain, speak with your doctor about getting your vitamin D levels checked.

Fish Oil Supplements

Fish oil contains essential fatty acids which have anti-inflammatory properties. Because of these properties, regular fish oil supplementation can be beneficial to aid in pain management. Experts did a trial with 250 participants who said they had neck and back pain. Each person was given 2.4g of fish oil daily for two weeks, which was reduced to 1.2g and gradually totally removed. 60% of participants taking part in the experiment reported an improvement in pain.

Willow Bark Supplementation

Willow bark is also known as ‘’natures aspirin’’. It’s derived from several varieties of willow tree and has been used for centuries as a natural pain reliever. Taken from the branches of 2-3-year-old willow trees, the active ingredient in willow bark is salicin. You can take willow bark in the form of a supplement or a powdered variety. Studies have shown it to significantly help in lowering the severity of lower back pain, joint pain, headaches and even mild osteoarthritis.

Devils Claw Supplement

Devils claw is a fruit which is bitter to the taste and shaped like a claw. It grows natively in South Africa and has been used in Europe for over 50 years to relieve pain. Experts have found it to have anti-inflammatory properties, pain relieving properties and concluded it works best with consistent use. One study performed in the UK over 8 weeks, found that Devils Claw supplementation in patients with osteoarthritis, significantly reduced their pain and stiffness scores.
