Dry Skin? You Might Be Making These Mistakes…
25 January 2021, 16:56

Hydrated skin, not only feels better but it looks happier, healthier and younger. If your skin is dehydrated, this could point to seasonal changes, lifestyle choices, an unhealthy diet or that your skincare regime is not working.

We all have unique skin that responds differently to certain types of creams and lotions. If your skin has always been dry or its suddenly started becoming dry, there could be a few mistakes you’re making. Let’s take a look at how to fix dry skin and any common mistakes you need to avoid.

Common Moisturising Mistakes to Stop Making

Over Cleansing Your Skin

Washing your face too frequently, can lead to dry, brittle skin. The skins microbiome contains microscopic bacteria, some of which are good bugs that actually improve the health of the skin. Make sure you’re not over washing your face and use a moisturising cleanser and cream.

Using a Skin Drying Face Wash

Many cheaper face washes contain harsh chemicals which will strip skin of any and all moisture. Ask at your local pharmacy for a skin wash that is designed for your skin type. If you have dry skin, opt for a skin nourishing wash. And if you have oily skin, choose an oil-fighting face wash.

Not Moisturising Immediately

The best time to moisturise your skin is immediately after its been washed. Your skin should be hydrated after being cleansed (if you’ve chosen a quality cleanser) and your moisturiser will help lock that hydration in. If not done right away, the skin may dry out again and a moisturiser won’t be as effective later on.

Using a Moisturiser Not Right for Your Skin Type

Using the right moisturiser for your skin is essential. If you use the wrong moisturiser, your skin may show signs of bad health like; being too oily or dry, being sensitive or acne break outs. Talk with your local skincare professional, if you’re not sure which skin type you have.

Can Supplements Help Improve Dry Skin?

Alongside using the right moisturiser and cleanser for your skin, the right diet and supplement regime can make a huge difference. Make sure you are drinking enough water, eating a diet rich in fruit and vegetables and getting enough sleep. Try out these supplements which may help to improve dry skin.

  • Vitamin D. Low levels of this vitamin have been linked to eczema and psoriasis. Add a vitamin D supplement to your diet which helps to support skin barrier function and skin health
  • Collagen. Research has shown that collagen supplements may help to increase skin hydration and reduce the signs of wrinkles. It’s an abundant protein in our body, but as we age it depletes. Support your skin with a quality collagen supplement
  • Vitamin C. This vitamin is a powerful antioxidant and helps with collagen production. Studies have shown significant improvements in skin health and skin hydration after increasing vitamin C intake in participants
