Dandruff is not a fun condition to have. It causes an itchy scalp and occasionally snowy flakes of skin that land onto your shoulders. Not a great look to have in public and one that can cause embarrassment and a loss of confidence.
But what are the causes of dandruff and how do you get rid of it? The cause may be different for each person but can include; not shampooing enough, oily or irritated skin (seborrheic dermatitis), yeast on the scalp causing excessive skin growth and a reaction to certain haircare products. Now you know the possible causes, here’s five ways to get rid of it fast.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil has been proven to contain anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Over the years it’s been used to treat ailments like acne, psoriasis and the symptoms of dandruff. One expert study showed tea tree oil to be effective at battling the fungus that causes seborrheic dermatitis. If you have a sensitive scalp, try adding a few drops of tea tree oil to some coconut oil, before massaging it into your scalp.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is thought to be one of the best ways to fight dandruff. This is because apple cider vinegar may help to reduce the growth of fungus by balancing the PH of skin. Mix equal parts vinegar with water or add a tablespoon to your shampoo and mix into the scalp.
Increase Vitamin Intake
It’s thought that if you’re deficient in certain vitamins like Omega-3, biotin or B7, this could be one reason for persistent dandruff. Omega-3 fatty acids are vital for skin and hair health, wound healing, to prevent premature ageing and much more. Try to get enough vitamins from your diet, but if you struggle take a quality health supplement.
Coconut Oil with Lemon
Coconut oil has many benefits for the body inside and out, including helping to eliminate dandruff. Mix two melted tablespoons of coconut oil with lemon juice and massage into your scalp. Aim to leave on for up to 20 minutes for maximum effect.
Use a Quality Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
Something as simple as getting the right shampoo for your hair and scalp could be all you need to get rid of dandruff. There are many quality anti-dandruff shampoos on the market that work well. Aim to wash your hair and scalp at least every 3 days and give your scalp a good massage with your anti-dandruff shampoo.
