Drink sufficient water to maintain healthy body function, the colour of your urine is a good indicator of hydration levels; when your urine is dark it is an indication of insufficient fluid intake, if it is clear the reverse may apply.
Avoid excessive exposure to direct sunlight, 15-30 minutes per day, use sunscreen, wear hats, long sleeves and gloves when gardening, back of hands necks and the tops of ears are very often areas we ignore. Temper this with the fact we need around 20 minutes per day for our body to produce the vitamin D essential to support good health and body function.
Natural moisturisers like pure emu oil or emu oil creams that are paraben and chemical free support skin health and in the case of pure emu oil are a natural SPF8 and a great back up to mitigate sun damage in the event of over exposure to direct sunlight.
Eyesight
Eyesight is yet another reminder of the passage of time, like many of these indicators there is a gradual change, you may need brighter lights to read. You may even struggle with the fine print and the phone book. It may be time to book an eye exam, reading is one of those pleasures we may enjoy when the pressure of work and childrearing is lifted from our shoulders. To maintain and prevent further damage use eye protection in the workshop, garden and driving, tinted or clear.
Hearing
Hearing is another one of those niggling reminders that time has passed; there may be many reasons for reduced hearing performance; exposure to noise at work or play, motorcycling, loud music or genetics.
Hearing loss can be broken down to two types; medical where the middle ear is not vibrating as it should in response to sound waves, this may be permanent or temporary due to wax, fluid, infection, a hole in the eardrum or irregularities in the mechanism or even medication.
Combinations
There are also combinations of medical conditions, exposure to noise and or aging and genetics. A major threat to our hearing is loud noise, some one-off loud noises may result in permanent hearing loss. The gun crews on the likes of the Victory would all be deaf after one broad side, an indication of noise levels that may result in permanent hearing loss. This may occur when exposed to around 120 decibels, an indication of just what is 100 plus decibels, jet engines, rock concerts, gunfire, fire crackers, sirens, chainsaws, sound systems, jack hammers and forges.
Noise levels that tend to be 80-100 decibels that will damage hearing with prolonged exposure; trucks, lawnmowers, chainsaws and motorcycles.
