If You Struggle to Get and Stay Pregnant, take a Look at These Tips to Support Reproductive Health

Studies have shown that 12.5% of New Zealand women have experienced infertility. Getting and staying pregnant can sometimes be a stressful process for couples and it could be a reflection of health and wellbeing. While it can just be a completely natural reason your body just isn’t ready to be pregnant, it can sometimes mean there’s an underlying health issue or your reproductive health needs a booster. Here are some top ways you can support your body and boost your fertility naturally.

Why Do Women Struggle with Fertility?

There are multiple reasons why women struggle to conceive and one of the main reasons is hormonal imbalances. This can be caused by; lifestyle, health, obesity, drug/alcohol use, stress, a poor diet or other conditions like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Ovulatory Syndrome, early menopause or estrogen dominance.

Tips to Boost and Support Your Fertility Naturally

If you are experiencing fertility issues, you should definitely check in with your health practioner or fertility specialist. But, there are a few ways you can give your body the best chance to conceive and have a more manageable pregnancy.

  • Reduce stress levels. Obviously if you’re trying to conceive and keep having disappointments it can be incredibly stressful. The thing is if you don’t manage your stress levels at this time, studies have shown than women with higher cortisol levels in their bodies (the stress hormone) take longer to get pregnant than women with lower amounts. So look after yourself – take a yoga class, do some meditation, reduce your hours in that stressful job and take time away from just constantly thinking about conceiving.
  • Eat a balanced, naturally sourced diet. A healthy diet is imperative for anyone, but especially crucial when you’re trying to conceive. Ditch the highly processed foods, cook from scratch and fill your diet with vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and healthy fats.
  • Take fertility boosting natural supplements. Always check with your doctor before starting any supplement regime, especially if you take any other medications or have a health condition. If you get the all clear, some supplements that may help are; vitamin D which has been linked to improved outcomes in pregnancy, a fish oil which will aid in the baby’s brain and development and magnesium which can assist in improving your sleep cycle. Other health supplements to consider are; Inositol, folic acid and folate.
  • Cut out consuming coffee, alcohol and cigarettes. While these might be your little pleasures in life you’ll find hard to give up, if you want to give your body the best chance to conceive it’s advised to give them up. Cigarettes and alcohol are toxins that can actually poison the reproductive system.
  • Eat antioxidant rich foods. Oxidative stress can damage the cells that combine to make a women’s eggs and reproductive organs. If these are not healthy, they’ll not be able to function at their optimal capacity thus leading to infertility. So get eating those blueberries, leafy green vegetables, pecans, beans and even a bit of dark chocolate!
