Silky, smooth and shiny hair feels awesome right? Men and women alike love to have great hair and when it’s on point, you feel confident and attractive. But the reality is, healthy hair is often hard to achieve for some people. If you weren’t blessed with thick, shiny locks naturally, you’ll need to put a bit of effort in to turn things around.

The hair of your dreams is possible, if you use the right products and methods, plus get into to some healthy habits. Luckily for us today, the route to healthy hair has been well studied and there are many great products to help us out. Here are five ways to get healthy hair naturally.

Know Your Hair Type

Knowing your hair type is essential in learning how to take care of it. What works for someone with dry hair, will not work for someone with oily hair. Determine which you have and create a haircare routine that is effective.

Some things to consider are; hair type, texture and thickness, how often you style and what is your activity level. If you have dry hair, shampooing less frequently is better. If you have oily hair, shampooing every day may be more beneficial.

Avoid Excessive Styling

While hair styling makes your hair look great for a little while, it may be damaging your hair in the long run. The excessive use of hot style tools can deplete moisture and if you already have dry hair, this becomes a problem. It can also damage your hair, making strands more brittle and prone to breakage. Minimise styling days to special occasions, or if you have to style, use a high quality heat protection spray.

Eat A Protein Rich Diet

Hair follicles are made predominantly of protein so eating enough is essential to the health of your hair. Lack of protein, has even been linked to the promotion of hair loss. Aim for 45 grams of protein daily including;

  • Lean meat
  • Fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel and herring
  • Beans and lentils
  • Vegetables like spinach, Chinese cabbage, asparagus, mustard greens, broccoli
  • Eggs and low fat dairy

Fill in the Gaps with Supplements

If you eat a certain diet which cuts out food groups, you may lack a vitamin or two. Health supplements are not meant replace a well-rounded diet, but fill in the gaps when you miss out on certain things. Zinc is an important vitamin for hair and not having enough can cause your hair to shed faster. Increase your zinc levels by eating nuts or taking a relevant health supplement.

Having enough omega-3 fatty acids in your diet may promote healthy hair and sebaceous glands which keep your scalp moisturised. Good sources include; salmon, flax seed, cottage cheese and certain cereals. But take a supplement if you don’t eat these foods.

Add Essential Oils to Your Haircare Routine

If you have frizzy/dry hair, apply hair oil like coconut oil when the hair is wet to seal in moisture. If you have oily hair or an oily scalp, search for a hair oil that encourages your scalp to produce less sebum. Only add conditioner onto the ends, so you won’t clog up your scalp.
