Will Boosting Your Immune System Help Fight Covid-19? Here’s What You Need to Know
While the Coronavirus invisibly rampages around the world, many people are wondering what they can do to protect themselves. Scientists are racing to find a cure but until that happens, there is currently no proven way to prevent or manage the virus.
Knowing what to do for the best is a challenge. Social distancing -- keeping yourself away from other possibly infected people will help, especially if you are older or have an underlying health condition. But, what else can we do? There is yet to be any science backed information on what we should do, but ensuring you maintain excellent hygiene, a balanced diet, a regular exercise regime and keep your immune system boosted with supplements, this may help.
Maintain a Healthy Eating Pattern
Depending on where you live, you may have experienced difficulty on buying your usual produce from the supermarket. Panic buying is real, but this doesn’t mean you can’t maintain a healthy eating pattern, you may just need to get creative for a while and buy a few different products. Aim for low carb, healthy fats, protein and vegetables. While there is no actual proof that low carb boosts your immune system, it is known to improve metabolic health and aid in weight maintenance.
Cut Out Smoking and High Amounts of Alcohol
Smokers are known to be at a higher risk of catching infections. These can lead to serious complications that have detrimental effects to their body and particularly lungs. Covid-19 is known to cause severe acute respiratory syndrome which can cause difficulty breathing. It goes without saying, a smoker is going to have more trouble fighting this. Too much alcohol can affect the gut barrier, allowing more bacteria to pass into the blood and possibly lower the immune system.
Manage Your Stress
While being quarantined during the Coronavirus is not a particularly stress free time, there are ways you can minimise your stress levels. Chronic stress can lead to a diminished immune function and this is the last thing we need. Get into a routine of managing your stress. Some ideas are;
Meditation
Mindfulness
Reading a book
Going for a walk (staying away from people!)
Exercise
Enjoying a hobby like crafts, writing or cooking
Take Sufficient Exercise
Previous studies have shown that those who exercise suffer from decreased amount of infections than those who don’t. Although, some studies showed strenuous exercise to temporarily decrease immune function while the body recovers. A good rule of thumb is; exercise at a rate that suits you. If you’ve never exercised before, now is not the time to start doing crazy circuits, but a long walk, gentle strength training or Pilates may have a positive effect.
Boost Your Immune System with Supplements
Will boosting your immune system help fight Covid-19? While this question has not definitively been answered yet by experts, it’s well known that a strong immune system helps protect your body from infection. Consider adding these immune boosting health supplements to your diet;
