Emu Oil - A Highly Beneficial Supplement

Australian aboriginals have known of the health promoting properties of emu oil for thousands of years according to the oral history passed down through the generations.

The Australian climate being what it is it wasn’t too long before the new arrivals from Europe also became aware of the properties of emu oil. Emu oil is a fatty acid with numerous health promoting benefits; emu’s are of course a native of our neighbour Australia. The emu is the second largest bird in the world, it ranks number two after the African ostrich, sounds a bit like Springbok and Wallabies rankings.

The humble emu is of course dromaius novahallandae (quite a mouthful) it grows up to 2 metres tall and like the ostrich is flightless. Their wings are an integral part of their cooling system when extended.

Emu oil is generally a light yellow colour. At human body temperature it has a consistency and viscosity similar to olive oil, on a warm day it is very thin and a little covers a surprising area of our skin. On a cooler day it will set and have a consistency of butter and on contact with our skin becomes extremely liquid again.

There are various grades of emu oil available, the lower grades tend to be less processed and suitable for the manufacture of soap, the more refined oil tends to be lighter in colour, bacteria free and suitable for topical use whereas the higher quality oils are suitable for manufacturing into soft-gel capsules for internal use.

The Silberhorn emu oil range of products are all produced from the higher more expensive pharmaceutical grade of raw material. This is used in all our products including cosmetic, dietary supplements and pure emu oil i.e. topical creams and oils and those processed for digestion.

It is generally accepted that emu oil is a natural SPF8 making it a natural sunscreen. It is used by our customers for many reasons, skin protection during radiation treatment and treating abdominal skin during pregnancy to mitigate stretch marks. Applied topically to support joint function and health; it is interesting to note at this point natural products very often when applied topically there will also be a benefit derived via the digestion process either in soft-gel capsule form or straight oil.
