Tips for Seasonal Allergies
11 September 2021, 02:51

The changing seasons bring with them challenges for some in the form of allergies and health compromising conditions, many of which are mild and nothing more than a nuisance or irritant. For some of us these seasonal changes maybe serious and even result in  hospital admissions.

A label generally applied to these seasonal times is the flu season; very often the trigger is the release of air borne substances like pollens and accelerated growth matter triggered by the change of season. Some plants may contribute to these irritations more than others the likes of privet and birch trees are a couple of the worst offenders for some.

For many this time of year passes unnoticed for others it’s a source of anxiety and various levels of medical conditions. For a ¼ to ⅓ of New Zealanders there are noticeable developments; like sneezing, watery eyes, irritated sinuses, runny or blocked airways, wheezing and coughing.

Airborne substances trigger the release of histamines into the blood stream which produces some of the symptoms we may experience.

People with a predisposition to the likes of asthma and emphysema are more vulnerable than others.

Other symptoms may include skin conditions like eczema and other skin irritations; these skin conditions like the minor lung and  breathing conditions mentioned previously may develop to something more serious and health compromising.

So it is important to attend to these symptoms in their early stages, if it itches don’t aggravate it by scratching which may rupture the skin triggering accelerated infection of the skin.

In summary the above conditions may be triggered by food, medications, pollen, dust mites, pet dander and mould spores.

So what can we do to minimise the risks as we approach these seasons, we can ensure we have a stock of natural products to minimise and treat these conditions to support general skin health, lung function, clear airways and breathing; elecampane, garlic, fenugreek and horsetail support lung function and breathing.

Skin conditions may be helped by the likes of emu oil based products and pure emu oil or freshly cut aloe vera applied topically to the skin.

Our skin is our body’s largest organ, so our skin health is fundamental to our overall good health. We often hear of the glow of life that emanates and radiates from individuals, this is very often the natural appeal that is a result of good health.

Our good health has its foundation in the building blocks of our skin, I am sure we have all heard the saying beauty is skin deep; the depth of this natural beauty is the question as the very matrix that supports our skin is the foundation that determines our appearance, wrinkles and aged or firm, peaches and cream.

Collagen is the foundation building blocks and a major component that makes up the human body; eyes and skin are the first thing others see when we meet.

When we are young collagen production and retention doesn’t tend to be an issue but as we age those tell-tale lines and wrinkles gradually appear, exposure to sunlight and our environment may accelerate or slow the aging process. Our body’s collagen production drops away as we age resulting in the overall imbalance that manifests in our appearance; the bounce and glow that emanates from our skin, hair and nails fades over time.

Our appearance impacts on our confidence and approach to life whether we like it or not; there are a number of things within our power we can do to slow the aging process, diet, environment and exercise are fundamental to maintain overall good health and that youthful, confident and vibrant appearance.

As we come out of winter through spring and summer the ravages of winter become apparent. so it’s important to choose the healthy food options, this is where supplements may help, skin health and joint health.

Two of the types of collagen available support these areas both of which are hydrolyzed to facilitate and support the body’s collagen utilisation.
