Our liver is located within the chest cavity on the right hand side above the stomach, intestines and right kidney; it is dark red brown in colour and wedge shaped, it weighs roughly 1-1.5kgs.
Our blood circulates through what is effectively a blood conditioning organ that produces plasma, cholesterol and proteins, regulates amino acids (the building blocks of proteins), haemoglobin, supports our bloods clotting characteristics and plays a major part in our immune functions removing bacteria from the blood.
Our liver is an organ that is fundamental and essential to maintain our bodies ongoing health and function; it performs more than 500 vital functions, some are less well-known and others are well-known; like the production of bile which breaks down fats in the small intestine aiding digestion and facilitates the removal of toxins and waste.
As we can see our liver is an organ we must respect and look after, foods that support liver health include; beetroot in its many forms, broccoli, mustard greens, brussel sprouts, nuts, prickly pear, olive oil, fish rich in omega3 fatty acids, grapes, blueberries, cranberries, grapefruit (may affect blood pressure medication), tea and surprisingly coffee.
Drinking water plays a vital role in cleansing our livers of toxins and waste, our liver is an organ that maybe adversely impacted by the consumption of alcohol especially in excess regularly, something to be mindful of as we approach Christmas.
